Hesed Design

The purpose of Hesed Design is to improve both people’s lives and the environment. Designers and manufacturers of the Hesed Chair and Stool, they use simple, elegant design, and combine the most advanced manufacturing methods and materials with traditional skills and experience.

The Hesed Chair and Stool have been designed to ease chronic back pain and actively improve health and well being. Using technical innovations tested over twenty years, they replicate your standing position whilst sitting.

Hesed Design and PolyGlobal

Hesed Design first approached PolyGlobal in 2017 during the design stage of their project. Si Freedman, Industrial Designer, found PolyGlobal’s website searching for information on shore hardness.

Initial conversations centred mainly around manufacturing options for components within their chair and stool, initial sketches for production options and pricing viability. Further discussions then turned to material options, predominantly around surface finish and flexibility rather than mechanical properties.

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) options were both explored. As retail parts, touch and feel were important, and so TPE was chosen as the preferred option due to its wide range of shore hardness and the soft, matt finish of moulded parts.

As the customer had already trialed temporary components, PolyGlobal were able to move quickly into mould production and sampling.

Key Requirements and Considerations

  • Whilst dimensions were crucial, of equal importance was how the components fit and worked alongside other materials. The chair and stool units are made using cast metals, formed plywood and foam moulded parts. All components needed to work harmoniously to ensure fluid movement. In these situations, tolerances and variances can change. Understanding this was key to ensuring that the components suited their application.

 

  • The surface finish and flexibility of the finished parts was critical. Particularly with softer materials, process controls need to be considered. Material shrinkage can occur post moulding, which can leave imperfections on the surface of finished parts, and softer options can present a risk of flashing. During the moulding process a small amount of residue can gather at the joining point of components.

 

As the project developed, due to the success of the first batch of components, some of which involved metal encapsulation, more parts were added to the range manufactured by PolyGlobal.

As the parts became slightly more unique in design, CAD modelling and 3D printed prototypes enabled Hesed Design to check fit and profile sizes before moving to tooling and production.
